What's up with Capetonians and cold water?

Appreciate the delights and benefits of cold-water immersion today! Here's how.
Look, I am the first one to say that cold water has never been my thing and that it requires a certain kind of steely disposition and mindset to really enjoy it (or a wetsuit). I know sometimes I get so caught up in the stories I tell myself, that I simply miss out on some of the most life-changing experiences. So, there’s something to be said for putting aside these unfounded thoughts and just taking the plunge…Here’s how:
1. Pick a beautiful place to immerse yourself
Exposure to a beautiful setting is comforting. The gentle sounds and scents all contribute to greater relaxation. The soothing sound of moving water triggers a response in our brains that increases blood flow to your brain and heart, which induces relaxation.
2. Invite a friend to join you
It feels good to share, we know that. It simply increases our feelings of well-being, and it is free. By sharing your cold-water dip with a friend, you are planting the experience and sense of well-being firmly in your memory. Your association with this will be positive. So, find that like-minded friend who will enjoy doing this with you and make a date for the weekend now.
3. Pack the right gear!
We know the water is chilly, so pack a consoling flask of hot tea or coffee for after your swim. Dress in your cossie and pull on your Octohoodie before you leave the house. Your Octohoodie is the perfect accessory to use on the beach, at the pool, after a surf or SUP, and as your seaside “changing room” after your dip. Our hooded beach robe simplifies getting out of the house and improves your water occasions all year round.
4. Why cold water, oh why?
The benefits are numerous. It is fun! It is also exhilarating, liberating and a sensory explosion. The chill on your skin, the magnificent environment and the shared experience all contributes to a flux of natural endorphins. And as your heart pumps faster and you breathe in and out at pace for your body to keep itself warm, you burn calories.
PS you could always opt to wear a wetsuit, but that would spoil half the fun!
My first cold water immersion was at Woolleys Tidal Pool, Main Road Kalk Bay with my best friend. Great view and sensational company. From there it was the Great Tidal Pool Adventure, Octohoodie and all!
So, Gear up for Fun and get dipping.
